Nicolas Feuillatte Launches Pink Prestige Cuvée - Palmes d'Or Rosé

After many years of passionate work, Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte launched its first pink Prestige Cuvée, the Palmes d’Or Rosé 1996 in October 2002 in the US. When head winemaker Jean-Pierre Vincent set out to create a very special and rare wine aimed at Champagne lovers, little did he know this would prove to be the challenge of a lifetime. His exceptional creation is the latest addition to the Nicolas Feuillatte range of Champagnes and is positioned at the top end of the Champagne market with an expected retail price of $170 per bottle.

The 100% Pinot Noir cuvée is a blend of 50% Bouzy in the Montagne de Reims, chosen for its powerful structure and 50% Riceys, a village in the southernmost part of the champagne region known for fruit possessing exceptional aromas. Jean-Pierre Vincent was well aware of the potential of those two regions in creating fine wine but it was his genius which matched the two in creating a prestige champagne cuvée. Previous attempts to capture the essence of fruit from the Riceys region for a still wine had proved frustrating. “Rosé des Riceys is a very racy wine,” says Jean-Pierre Vincent. “Blending it with a more classic and subtle Pinot Noir from Bouzy gives it the perfect balance!”

Unlike most pink champagnes which are a blend of red and white wines, the Palmes d’Or Rosé is a “rosé de saignée”, a technique involving the maceration of grape juice and skins together to obtain the desired rosé color. A labor-intensive technique, the saignée method provides an element of surprise as to what exact tone will develop after second fermentation in the bottle. However, it is just this technique that is also responsible for the champagne’s unique flavor profile.

The Palmes d’Or Rosé has a deep copper color, rich with aromas of wild strawberries and cherries lingering passionately on the palate – a sensuous, velvety wine to share with a loved one during a precious moment. This cuvée may be enjoyed as an aperitif of unparalleled quality, however its fine bubbles and powerful aromas make it a perfect match for dishes including lobster, pan seared foie gras, turbot or caviar. Its strong aromas also make it ideal with a large array of desserts and cakes.
The Palmes d’Or Rosé is available only from selected fine wine merchants and top restaurants.

“Given the enthusiasm we have encountered during Jean-Pierre Vincent’s market visit in 2002 and again this year, we are very optimistic about the succes of this cuvée” says Pascal Boyé, Director of Sales of Nicolas Feuillatte in the Americas. “It will join, and probably lead our family of Nicolas Feuillatte Champagnes.”
